  1. Alignment
  2. Repetition
  3. Contrast
  4. Hierarchy
  5. Balance

Graphic Design Principles

We will discuss each principle, as well as understand how graphic design principles work together to help us communicate the right message to the right audience.

Graphic Design Principle #1: Alignment

Alignment is one of the most basic, but most important principles of graphic design. Through alignment, our eyes are allowed to see order, which is quite comforting to a reader.

If you ever come across a design and start looking at every corner of this design, and have not decided where to start looking, left? Right? Up, or Down? It is because of the lack of the Graphic design principle: Alignment.

Alignment allows our eyes to seamlessly flow through the visual message. Aligning all the design elements with one another so that every item has a visual connection with something else on the page, tightens a design and eliminates the haphazard, messy effect which comes from random placement of elements.

Graphic Design Principle #2: Repetition

Repetition means consistency, and by repeating an element or a group of elements in a design, you are subconsciously creating a familiarity or identity. That is why repetition is one of the graphic design principles that strengthen the design.

Repetition can be used in different fields as it is considered to be a major factor in the unity of multiple page documents, as well as creating patterns which is a great way in branding and digital marketing.

Graphic Design Principle #3: Contrast

As we would love to say, The contrast shows the true meaning of the design. As contrast is the most effective way to create emphasis and impact with your design.

How is the contrast created? That is very easy, contrast is created when two opposite elements are combined. For example: small/big, classic/contemporary, thin/thick, cool/warm.

You may ask why contrast and combining two opposite elements on the same page is one of the greatest graphic design principles?

Contrast plays a vital role in giving the reader a guide on where to look first, what is the most important point? What stands out the most?

Graphic Design Principle #4: Hierarchy

According to the definition of Hierarchy in the dictionaries, we can say that It’s a system in which people or things are arranged according to their importance.

The same thing in graphic design is a series of things that create a visual organization, that gives the reader an idea and a hint on where to look first.

Graphic Design Principle #5: Balance

Now we have come to the last principle of graphic design and that is Balance.

Balance in design is the weight that is distributed on the page by the placement of elements.

It is well known that balance provides stability and structure to a design, either through symmetry or tension of elements.
